You may have heard about IV lounges or clinics popping up near you. These lounges offer IV therapy - the latest trend in health and wellness.
But what exactly is IV therapy, how does it work and what are the benefits? What Is IV Therapy? IV or intravenous therapy delivers a cocktail of vitamins and minerals contained in a solution of distilled water and sodium chloride (salt). The solution is delivered directly into the bloodstream bypassing the digestive tract and liver. This ensures better delivery and maximum absorption of the nutrients into the body. Vitamin and mineral content may differ from one clinic to the next. Different solutions are available to treat different needs. For example, an IV solution to give you an energy boost will contain mostly the B-complex vitamins. A solution for dehydration may contain a greater concentration of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) that are lost when you become dehydrated. This treatment is especially popular to treat hangovers in a hurry. Fluids to help treat the flu or other illnesses may contain a combination of electrolytes to treat dehydration as well as Vitamin C to give the immune system a boost. Vitamins A, C, E and D may be contained in an IV solution to improve skin health. How Does Intravenous Therapy Work? A needle is inserted into a vein, usually located in the arm. This needle is attached to a line which runs to a bag of IV fluids. A small valve is then opened on the IV line to allow the IV solution to slowly drip straight into the blood stream. The therapy can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on how quickly the solution can be administered. It is not recommended to speed up the process as this can have risks. Rather take the time to lie back, relax and de-stress. What Are The Benefits Of IV Therapy? When food and vitamin or mineral supplements pass through the digestive tract, some of the goodness is lost or flushed from the body in stool and urine. Therefore, you are not receiving the full dose of nutrients from your food or as listed on the supplement bottle. IV therapy is a way to eliminate this problem and ensure that your body receives all the nutrients that it needs. It is important to only receive IV therapy from a registered health practitioner who is qualified to insert and intravenous line and administer IV therapy.
